During your pre-natural days, when you relied on straight styles or a relaxer, your thought process was to push your hair to conform, to bend to your rules. The act of going natural is emotional for one main reason: you’re forced to relinquish control. You have no idea what your curl pattern will look like. You don’t know how it will react to certain products. You don’t know if it will grow up, out or down. You’re not sure which styles you’ll be able to do. Why do edges matter? Seriously, why? We joke about them getting pulled, snatched, yanked and singed off. We gasped at the now infamous photo of Naomi Campbell with her with wind-blown extensions accidentally revealing her lack of edges. We’d fork over bone marrow for the newest edge pomade that actually works. We want them pressed, slicked or unruly and full. We have demands for our edges like that of a life partner we’re auditioning. Edges MEAN something. But why? (more…)
