Makeup: The Great Cover Up – Concealer Best Practices

Concealer is a cosmetic blessing. Though we typically use it to hide the sins of a long, sleepless night or a pesky scar, there are a few more ways to utilize your cover up.

Luckily, summer’s blazing sun affords us the opportunity to flaunt a bronze glow, so our skin tones are naturally more even. However, when applying concealer, here are a few tricks to making it look natural:

1. Choose Your Best Shade: Maybe a ghostly white hue just isn’t your thing. You don’t have to abide by the “two shades lighter than your skin tone” rule. For scars, a concealer that’s much closer to your own skin tone will give you better coverage. However, for contouring, choose a lighter shade. Consider your goals and go with a product that will give your those results.

2. Press, Pat, Swipe: Don’t smooth on your concealer upon first application. Instead, use your tool (preferably a small makeup brush) to gently press your concealer onto your face. This allows for better coverage.

3. Blend it Baby: Make sure to blend your concealer into the rest of your face. Your fingers can sometimes do the trick. Follow up with a foundation and pressed powder to set.

Makeup: Summer Smoke

Be a summer sex pot. Smoky looks give those dainty pastels a swift kick this season. The key to keeping the look somewhat ethereal is to focus on highlighting your cheeks and using minimal, if any, blush. Opt for shimmer, as opposed to fall’s matte favorites. Lips should be lavished with a nude gloss in a slightly flushed hue. Check out our product favs and more looks we love. Read More…

Makeup: Silver Lining

The 70’s defined what it meant to be a sensual woman and those fierce, feminine looks have slid back on the runways over 40 years later. Spring’s makeup palette drenches eyes with dynamic neons and silvers that resurrect the spirit of Studio 54. Grab a makeup brush and let’s go.

SILVER SHOCK: For eyes, consider a shimmering silver. We’re talking lush, sizzling, electric silver that pops and wows. If you love your lids, bathe them in the shade. Don’t be stingy. Skip the subtle liner and paint your entire lid. Try MAC Pigment in Platinum.

FALL IN LINE: A perfectly lined eye always compliments a retro look. Use a great liner like to create a “tight eye” with a thick line of a deep dark shade. Apply your liner after applying your eye shadow and remember, there’s not much room for mistake. Keep a steady hand. BADgal Liner Waterproof Eyeliner is almost magical.

Makeup Tip: The Faux Brow Arch

Not everyone has voluptuous eyebrows like Janelle Monae or Beyonce, but we can fake it with style. Model Jourdan Dunn has seamlessly perfected the faux brow. Mind this easy tip.

When all else fails, create an arch. Brush brows upward and use a lighter liner to trace a neat line where your arch would normally be. Fill in that space with concealer using a small angled eye shadow brush. Literally shade in your arch – hairs and all. Apply a few swipes of a nude shadow and you’ll fool the masses. Shade in your brows with a chestnut brown pencil to avoid the cartoonish look of a jet black pencil or powder.

Go…and be fierce.

Better Skin: 5 Natural Gems

Great skin starts on the other side of your cupboard and refrigerator. Check out these natural ingredients.

OATMEAL

How to use: Yup, the .99 cent Quaker oats at your local grocery store. Oat milk provides nourishment for those with dry, inflamed skin, along with those suffering from eczema and psoriasis.  If you have dry skin, combine a half a cup of oats with a tablespoon of olive oil. Add warm water and mix until you achieve a paste like consistency (add oats as necessary). Smear on your face or affected areas, and leave on for 25 min. The oatmeal will harden a little. That’s okay. Rinse and follow up with a great moisturizer. Read More…
