Curl Talk: Are Naturals Sexier?

Are we the sexier texture? The fact that men walk up on unsuspecting curlies on the street to get a mere graze of their curls may prove so.

But what is it exactly that’s so sexy about natural hair? “You’re not afraid to be yourself,” proclaimed one of our guy friends. Not that weaved or straight-haired hotties don’t turn heads, but there is something sensual about embracing your God-given hair. There’s no veil, just you.

Weigh in. Are naturals sexier?

Exclusive: Carol’s Daughter Opens New Salon in ATL

Joining her Mirror concept salon in Harlem, Lisa Price, creator of Carol’s Daughter, has opened a gorgeous new spot in Atlanta. Price partnered with Robin Groover, creator of Atlanta’s ever-popular Too Groovy natural hair salon, to create a chic atmosphere for education and styling.

Housed in Atlanta’s Lenox Mall, Mirror seeks to revolutionize natural hair care. Each client is treated to an in-depth consultation, which determines your hair needs and characteristics including texture, length, dryness, damage and personality. Expertly trained stylists teach you about your hair’s porosity and density, explaining how these two things affect your styling process. Awesome, huh? The consultation includes: scalp analysis, density evaluation, porosity test, elasticity test, healthy haircare plan and signature style, cut and color blueprint.

During the washing and conditioning process, there’s a perfectly placed mirror just above the styling station to allow clients to view which products and techniques the stylist is using. It completely takes the mystery out of that “salon finish.” Coil and loc care, blowouts, straight hair care, spiral sets and traditional curly styling round out the services.

Price was on hand to discuss her absolute favs, which currently include the Monoi Oil Sacred Strengthening Serum (we LOVE this product!), Lisa’s Hair Elixir Restoring Hair Oil and Lisa’s Hair Elixir Fortifying Scalp Spray.

Check out our photos of the new spot. Read More…

Workout Tress: Tips For Hot Exercise Hair

Attempting to maintain your perfectly polished coif during a workout session can definitely be equated to rocket science. However, there are several styles that actually work with your frenzied, sweaty pace on the treadmill. Here are our top styles.

1. Pomp For the Circumstance:   A limp, drawn-up fingerstyle is just as annoying as a woman’s formerly relaxed roots kinking their way back to the motherland.  A pompadour keeps curls away from the nape of your neck, keeps heat out and can even be worked with a cute head band that keeps edges in line. The Mystery of Fairy Knots

Do you have Fairy knots? They may feel like little beads along the hair shaft. They are annoying and most women comb as much hair as they can towards the front of their head, grab a pair of scissors and begin clipping away any knots in view. First, let me state that I do not advocate trimming your own hair, especially with any pair of scissors. Dull scissors can fray the ends of the hair shaft, leaving them in the same condition they were in before the makeshift trim, if not worse. Most importantly, there are some irregularities of the hair shaft that cause consistent knotting. This is most commonly seen in curlier hair types. Unfortunately some women will experience knots in their hair shaft on a regular basis. These knots are not always at the end of the hair shaft. Instead, single or multiple knots can be seen and felt along the length of the hair shaft. We have nicknamed this phenomenon “Fairy knots” but the technical term is Trichonodosis.

A Wash & Go in FOUR Simple Steps

A Wash & Go in FOUR Simple Steps with Cantu Shea Butter Coconut Curling Cream

By Wes (of HoneyBrownSugar.com)

I recently posted this pic on Instagram and many people asked if this was a twist out. It isn’t – It’s my version of a simple wash & go. I usually use Let’s Jam Custard Cream Gel to achieve my wash & gos but for the curls above I used Cantu’s Shea Butter Coconut Curling Cream (from the August Curlbox).

Here’s how I did it:

Be Cautious With Your Leave In

Why Your Leave-in Conditioner May Be Drying Out Your Hair

by Dr. Kari Williams

I talk to lots of women who use a lot of leave-in conditioners. The tricky thing about the product landscape of today is that there are some product manufacturers who will label a product “Leave-in conditioner” (because they know we love them) and it’s a great daily moisturizer, but there are others that are filled with proteins that can have a drying affect on the hair.
