As a mom, I know what it’s like to want the best for your kids – including the products we use during tub time. You especially want the best products when their scalps start fussing. You know what I’m talking about – itching, flakes, redness, and don’t get me started on those dreaded cradle cap flakes!
So, what do you do? You dash to the store and are grab anything in the baby aisle that boasts being “safe” for sensitive skin and you think you’ve found the magic remedy. So, then why is your little one’s scalp irritated again a few days later? It’s because you only found a temporary solution for the problem.
When scalp and skin is feeling sensitive – it’s because it’s stuck in the cycle of sensitivity. Your kids’ skin is still taking its baby steps and it lacks the ability to maintain and regulate proper moisturization. Think of our skin as a brick wall, with its natural oils holding everything in place. When it’s weak, it lets moisture out and lets irritants in.
Don’t freak out! This is a normal occurrence among the littlest of humans out there, but especially those destined to have bountiful, beautiful curls when they grow up. Here’s why:
The Follicle – While those little baby curls and wisps are too precious for words, they don’t do a very good job of distributing the natural oil from the scalp to the rest of the hair shaft. That means oil is building up on the scalp and throwing everything out of whack. You might say to yourself – wait, if my scalp is overly oily, why would that cause it to be dry? Remember, proper moisture balance is key. That’s why if things are too dry or too oily, you run into irritation.
To Wash or Not to Wash? – As a curly girl myself, I had to learn the hard way about not washing my hair every day. But, that doesn’t mean you should go too many days in between washing. Again, going back to that all-important moisture balance – you don’t want oil to accumulate on the scalp for too long.
Thick Products – Your first instinct to treat a red, flakey scalp may be to apply a thick balm – sometimes we associate “thick” with “healing”, but that’s not always the case. So, put down the baking soda and heavy oils like and opt for something more lightweight and gentle for their scalps.
So, here’s a little secret about breaking the pesky cycle of sensitivity – it’s all about the routine. Just like we teach our kids to brush their teeth daily, we have to get in the habit of taking care of our skin the same way. You want to look for products that not only treat, but prevent the symptoms of sensitivity.
That’s why I developed the SoCozy Hush line of products. After listening to parents come in and out of my salon for years inquiring about their children’s sensitive scalps, I did my homework. What I learned was surprising. While 92% of products in the baby aisle claim to be gentle enough for sensitive skin, they actually contain at least one skin irritating ingredient.
That’s why you’ll find only the most nourishing and soothing ingredients in the Hush line. Made with our own proprietary ingredient complex, Hush features an ultra-gentle blend of ingredients that help soothe those fussy scalps. Check it out.
Defenscalp (Rose Bay Extract): Derived from plants, this multi-functional ingredient is clinically proven to re-balance the scalp & reduce the appearance of flakes quickly. P.S. – Defenscalp won the Silver Award for Best Ingredient in 2016.
Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice: Relieves scalp of redness, scaling, itching & inflammation.
Vitamin B5: Gives hair and scalp much needed moisture and makes detangling a breeze.
Bisabol (Chamomile): Promotes healthy hair growth + soothes the scalp.
Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Extract: Helps heal dry & itchy skin.
Allantoin: Soothes, softens and protects the skin.
The last secret is to use products that are designed to work together. Some formulas don’t play well together, and mixing and matching products can further irritate your child’s scalp. Go for a complete line of products that work hand in hand with each other to get the best results.
